The Company of Wolves is fantasy horror film which is directed by Neil Jordan, starring Sarah Patterson and Angela Lansbury. The film was made in 1984, and is based on the book ‘The Bloody Chamber’ by Angela Carter. It’s a series of short stories about werewolves. Some of the stories are loosely based on the fairy tale ‘Little Red Riding Hood’. The film is set during modern times but most of the film takes place in the character Rosaleen's dreams. Her dreams are set in a fairytale forest where she lives with her parents. After wolves kill her sister, her parents tell her go and live with her grandmother, who knits her a red shawl to wear. Rosaleen's grandmother gives her a serious warning which is to be beware of men whose eyebrows meet in the middle, as they are werewolves in disguise. Later on Rosaleen does meet one of these men/werewolves and falls in love with it.
This is truly one amazing film. The special effects might be a bit dated but the story and imagery are brilliant. It takes one of the most well know fairy tales and turns it into a surreal, dream like setting. The underlying themes feature childhood innocence and fear. This film is as disturbing as it is beautiful. This one of the best examples of a story being reinterpreted. I would recommend this film to anyone who is interested in fairy tales.
