This is a Theatre poster by Polish poster artist Wieslaw Walkuski. It is called ‘Romeo i Julia’ which in English translates to ‘Romeo and Juliet’. The media used for this is oil paint. Out of all the theatre posters Walkuski has done this particularly one is my favourite, and he has done over 200 posters. This poster features strong imagery that makes the viewer look twice. Looking at this poster you can see that he truly is gifted with painting. The figures look so realistic, they look like photograph. The figures and the flower like a sculpture rather than painting. He has truly captured what the William Shakespeare’s play is about, a love story that has blossomed out of hatred between two families.
Out of all the ‘Romeo and Juliet’ theatre posters I have seen this one is by far the best. Most of the posters just focus on the figures and nothing else, which has been done over hundred times before. Walkuski takes the figures and the flower and makes them apart of one another, like they were born to be together. This image is full of symbolism. There is one single thorn with blood on it to represent that the story doesn’t have a happy ending. It also looks like memorial because of the colour and texture used in the image.
I am extremely jealous of this poster because it is so inventive and clever. Everything in the poster doesn’t look out of place. This poster proves that you can still be traditional with technique and make it look new and fresh. This will continue to influence me and inspire me to produce work in a similar style.
